DemonSpawn: On The Run The Delphi Project sought to understand the meaning of life through the medical study of a vampire. Inevitably, the vampire escaped in a bloody rampage that left an incredible trail of carnage. It should have been the end of the experiments. Incredibly it was not. Delphi lives with new subjects trying to become vampires through the serum developed from Simon Molinar’s blood. Meanwhile the vampire and the doctor he saved from Delphi, Joe McKay, continue their efforts to bring the Delphi Project down for good. Demon Spawn - On the Run continues the adventures of Simon Molinar, the ancient, enigmatic vampire and Joe McKay, the dedicated healer. An international group of writers takes this odd couple from the arctic circle to the barrier islands of the Carolina Outer Banks and beyond. These compelling tales have plenty of action and jeopardy, but they are also about the widely diverse views on the intensifying relationship between the two men. From the classic romantic vampire, to the witty and urbane to evil incarnate, Demon Spawn - On the Run has something for every taste. Price: $11.99

A love of words has always been a part of this author’s life. D.L. Warner is Deborah Lynn Warner or technically, Deborah Lynne Theresa Warner. The reason for initials is obvious then. D.L. became my writing name while I was in journalism school. Back in the 70s, it was easier to be taken seriously on the University paper as a D.L. than as a Deborah Lynn. I actually began writing far earlier than college. I wrote my first ‘novel’ (all 23 pages) while still in grade school. My mother, Patricia was the inspiration. I was getting on her nerves one day and she told me to go write a book. I’ve been scribbling into a notebook or tapping at a keyboard ever since. Most of my jobs involved words. I never became a journalist. The great collapse of the daily newspaper in the early 80s changed my career path to public relations. After five years of making stuff up for clients that passed for the truth, I decided I might as well be writing fiction for a living. I went to grad school to study Creative Writing and English Literature. Graduate school taught me two valuable lessons. First, I could be driven to the point of hating to read. And two, I couldn’t depend upon the whims of a muse to meet my assignment deadlines. Professors, like editors, seldom accept the lack of mood or muse for not handing in chapters. I learned to write and polish my work faster and to keep going even when less than inspired. One method I used to write even when blocked on one story was to write something completely different from the story giving me trouble. That’s how I ended up writing my first screenplay. It was Star Trek, of course. Did I mention that I was also a geek growing up? But geeky aside, I got over my writer’s block and also acquired a for real Hollywood agent. That promising beginning with television against the spirit deadening difficulty I was having with novel publishers gave me the hair brained idea that cracking Hollywood would be easier than cracking the New York publishing arena. That notion led to years of serendipity in which I moved to LA with a film school graduate named Jon Cunningham, married him, made some short films and a vampire movie and twice attended the Cannes Film Festival. Film has been and continues to be quite an adventure that has made for great party stories, a lot of gray hair and high blood pressure. It’s still not the same as spending time with characters on a blank page writing a story that will not be subjected to creative input from others the way film requires. I missed writing novels. The closest I had come to that was writing slash fanfiction. Fanfiction are stories based on TV shows or films and even novels. Slash is sexualized fan fiction most often with characters of the same sex. In a time of creative and personal depression and frustration, I began writing fanfiction based on Star Trek: Voyager. I meant them to be a series that was five or six stories long. They continued through the length of the series and ended at over 50 stories and hundreds of pages. The Secret Logs of Mistress Janeway brought me an odd sort of fame and recognition. The works became well known to Scif-fi TV writers and the cast of that particular series. I appeared in the hit documentary Trekkies. I also acquired some valuable professional contacts and made some dear friends in fandom. Writing slash even led to the funding of our first feature film. But after a time, that wasn’t enough to satisfy my itch to write a novel. The first novel I wrote in the ten years since moving to LA was Demon Under Glass. It was the novelization of the film Jon and I made in 2002. I was pleased with the book, but the characters and their story were not wholly my own. It was at this time that I became enamored with The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. I had been reading fanfiction based on the films and was greatly tempted to write some of my own. But the pull of creating original characters was greater. I realized what I loved was the fantasy world in which the films were set. It was a universe with rules of the author’s making. So I created my own fantasy realm and wrote, The Gift of Surrender. The novel celebrates my love of the romance genre while setting it on its ear and satisfied my love for fantasy worlds. My life continues to be full of serendipity. There seem to be no patrons of writers anymore. At least, I can’t find them. Thus my husband and I support ourselves with very odd jobs while working on our next filming adventure. Meanwhile, I am working on the sequel to The Gift of Surrender, The Price of Surrender. I found my love of reading again. One of our next film projects will involve a great work of literature. I hope. The only thing I’m sure of is that I have a notepad or keyboard to keep putting together words. If you want more information on my colorful past, you'll have to buy me dinner or send me a big bottle of good wine. |
